Education

First-year students in the University of Washington's Masters of Urban Planning program take part in a multi-quarter, hands-on studio course. In winter quarter, "studio prep" introduces the students to the study area and project goals. In spring quarter, they begin to design solutions related to the problem at hand. Our LEAP-HI team, SDOT, and the UDistrict Partnership act as clients who provide input on the direction of the students' work.

These students have become familiar with LEAP-HI research and goals and are actively working toward understanding how the ROW may become increasingly resilient in the face of disruption.
The images above depict an example of student work in the studio-prep winter quarter. Categorization of business frontage and ROW use intensity will be a useful tool in understanding ROW resilience. Currently, students are honing methods of analysis to be further employed in the spring quarter.
